About Ruth Kelly:
Ruth Kelly is the president and CEO of Venture Publishing Inc., and the publisher and editor-in-chief of Alberta Venture and Alberta Oil magazines. In September 2007, Venture launched Unlimited, the online publication for the 20 to 35 year old business person.
Ruth served as the 2005 chair of the board of directors for the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. She currently serves on the boards of the Banff Centre Leadership program, Edmonton Expo 2017 and Travel Alberta. She is also president of the Edmonton Business Council for the Visual Arts. In 2009, she was appointed to the National Task Force on Financial Literacy.
Ruth was recognized as a Global Woman of Vision in 1998, a YWCA Woman of Distinction in the Entrepreneur category in 2003 and received the Advertising Club of Edmonton’s 2004 Fellowship Award for contributions to the industry and the community. In 2005, she was selected as the Allard Chair of Business by the MacEwan School of Business and received a Centennial Medal for service to the province. The Canadian Women in Communications selected Ruth for their 2008 Woman of the Year award, making her the first Albertan to receive this national honour. She also received an honorary degree in business from NAIT in 2008.
About Lesley MacDonald:
Lesley MacDonald is the founder, producer and host of the Global Woman of Vision Television program, a 16-year national award-winning series that celebrates the accomplishments of inspirational women in the Edmonton area. She writes about their stories as well in the Edmonton Journal.
Lesley’s experience in television spans more than 25 years, from copy clerk to reporter/anchor at Global Television in Toronto, to anchor/producer at Global Television in Edmonton. She now runs New Viewpoint Communications, working on a variety of media-related projects. She is also a sought-after public speaker and acts as host, moderator, emcee and speaker for countless local and national programs and events.
Lesley is an active member of the Edmonton community. She has served on the United Way cabinet for more than 10 years, is a member of the Downtown Rotary Club and an advisor to the Immigrant Access Fund.
Lesley is the recipient of a Woman of Style award for excellence in the media and a Rotary Integrity Award. She is married with teenagers.
About Paula Simons:
Paula Simons is the Edmonton Journal's award-winning City columnist. A graduate of the University of Alberta and Stanford University, in her 15 years with the Journal, she has served as provincial affairs columnist, culture columnist, and as a member of paper's editorial board.
A five-time National Newspaper Award nominee, Simons was also part of a Journal news team that won an NNA for its coverage of the murder of four RCMP officers at Rochfort Bridge. In 2002, Simons was part of a Journal team that won a Michener Award citation for meritorious public service journalism, for its investigation into the deaths of seven aboriginal children from the Samson First Nation. She has also received special awards from Edmonton's gay and lesbian community, Edmonton's Vietnamese community, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Canadian Bar Association and the Alberta Research Centre for Civil Liberties for her columns championing civil rights and social justice. In August 2007, she was named an Edmonton Woman of Vision.
Before joining The Journal, Simons spent seven years as a producer and documentary maker with CBC Radio. A frequent radio and television commentator, her work has also appeared in a wide variety of magazines, including Alberta Views, Legacy, Today's Parent, Saturday Night, Brick, Western Living and Reader's Digest. She's also a co-author of the best-selling volume of popular history, Alberta: 100 Years a Home. She lives in Edmonton with her husband and daughter.
About Kathy Conway:
Kathy has more than 25 years experience as an HR practitioner in both the private and public sectors, and has held executive positions in Bell Mobility and Rogers Communications. She has been a frequent contributor to print and broadcast media, as well as a speaker and panelist at professional events. She is a volunteer mentor in several organizations.
She joined PwC in 2005 as their coaching specialist, and has helped train over 1500 folks since joining. She is also involved the ongoing career planning and mentoring programs.
Kathy is the co-author of The Trainer’s Tool Kit, published by the American Management Association in 1998. The Trainer’s Tool Kit has been selected by four book clubs as a Book of the Month selection, and was updated and revised for re-release in 2004. It has been translated into many languages, including Arabic. She is a member of the Board of Canadian Women in Communications.
About Stephanie MacKendrick:
Stephanie MacKendrick has worked in the communications industry for more than three decades, 13 of them as President of Canadian Women in Communications. Stephanie holds a degree in journalism from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute (now Ryerson University), and worked as a journalist for ten years, including five with Broadcast News Ltd., at The Canadian Press. She then moved to corporate communications, serving at Rogers Communications Inc., and Unitel (MTS Allstream) before becoming Vice President, Corporate Communications at Atlantis Communications Inc. Stephanie joined Canadian Women in Communications (CWC) in 1996 and has been instrumental in developing CWC into a leading women’s professional organization.
Known internationally for her work to promote women’s participation on corporate boards, Stephanie is also immediate Past President (of the Board of Directors) of The International Alliance for Women (TIAW), a worldwide umbrella organization of women’s networks and is active in their Women on Boards and World of Difference Awards initiatives.
Stephanie served as Chair of the Board of The Innoversity Creative Summit in 2004 and 2005, a not-for-profit organization that fosters diversity in Canadian media. Stephanie was a member of the Board of Directors of the Smart Systems for Health Agency (SSHA) from 2006 to 2008 and she is also a member of the Board of Governors of Canada’s Telecommunications Hall of Fame Foundation (CTHoF). In 2005, she was named one of WXN’s 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada.
