CWC President Stephanie MacKendrick will interview Sue about the some of the surprising challenges she’s faced in and out of the political spectrum.

    About The Honourable Sue Barnes:

    The Honourable Sue Barnes P.C. is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Law. During her time at the school, Sue will pursue her interests in democratic and parliamentary development, the role of women in politics, and areas of ongoing advancement within the First Nations/Aboriginal Peoples of Canada.

    Sue received her B.A.(1974) and LL.B.(1977) from the University of Western Ontario and practiced law full time in London from 1979 to 1993. She served as a part-time legal member of the Ontario Criminal Review Board from 1986 to 1993. Sue has instructed and been a graduation speaker for the Law Society of Upper Canada Bar Admissions Program. Sue has also taught Business Law and Banking Law courses for Western’s Department of Part-Time and Continuing Education.

    Sue served five terms as Member of Parliament for London West from 1993 to 2008. She held a large variety of roles both in Government and as a member of the Official Opposition, including Chair of the Finance Committee of the House of Commons, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General with special emphasis on Judicial Transparency and Aboriginal Justice, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indian and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue. Critic posts included those of Public Health, Public Safety, Justice, and Canada Border Services.

    While a parliamentarian, Sue was active in many parliamentary associations, and has served on the Federal and International Executives of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, and the Federal Executive of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Sue participated and presented at numerous workshops, seminars, and colloquia as an M.P. representing Canada. Sue is a recipient of The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.

    Sue has travelled widely and lives with her husband John in London, Ontario. She has three grown children.

    About Kathy Conway:

    Kathy has more than 25 years experience as an HR practitioner in both the private and public sectors, and has held executive positions in Bell Mobility and Rogers Communications. She has been a frequent contributor to print and broadcast media, as well as a speaker and panelist at professional events. She is a volunteer mentor in several organizations.

    She joined PwC in 2005 as their coaching specialist, and has helped train over 1500 folks since joining. She is also involved the ongoing career planning and mentoring programs.

    Kathy is the co-author of The Trainer’s Tool Kit, published by the American Management Association in 1998. The Trainer’s Tool Kit has been selected by four book clubs as a Book of the Month selection, and was updated and revised for re-release in 2004. It has been translated into many languages, including Arabic. She is a member of the Board of Canadian Women in Communications.

    About Stephanie MacKendrick:

    Stephanie MacKendrick has worked in the communications industry for more than three decades, 13 of them as President of Canadian Women in Communications. Stephanie holds a degree in journalism from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute (now Ryerson University), and worked as a journalist for ten years, including five with Broadcast News Ltd., at The Canadian Press. She then moved to corporate communications, serving at Rogers Communications Inc., and Unitel (MTS Allstream) before becoming Vice President, Corporate Communications at Atlantis Communications Inc. Stephanie joined Canadian Women in Communications (CWC) in 1996 and has been instrumental in developing CWC into a leading women’s professional organization.

    Known internationally for her work to promote women’s participation on corporate boards, Stephanie is also immediate Past President (of the Board of Directors) of The International Alliance for Women (TIAW), a worldwide umbrella organization of women’s networks and is active in their Women on Boards and World of Difference Awards initiatives.

    Stephanie served as Chair of the Board of The Innoversity Creative Summit in 2004 and 2005, a not-for-profit organization that fosters diversity in Canadian media. Stephanie was a member of the Board of Directors of the Smart Systems for Health Agency (SSHA) from 2006 to 2008 and she is also a member of the Board of Governors of Canada’s Telecommunications Hall of Fame Foundation (CTHoF). In 2005, she was named one of WXN’s 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada.
